This week we were continuing with our walk through the book of Philippians-guess you could say we were just flippin through Philippians. Originally I had the thought of combining the humanity and the humility with the exaltation of Jesus Christ but that would not serve justice to the text. I had a wonderful time studying this passage. What truth and what thoughts for one to wonder, and what a blessing to be a child of the Kings of kings and Lord of lords. Our text read this;
Philippians 2:5-8 “Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man. He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
The Gospel writer Matthew records the events of a day in the region of Caesarea Philippi, when Jesus asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? Although, that question was asked centuries ago, many churches are preaching the wrong Christ, the world is trying to avoid Christ, but; what are you doing with Him?
In Philippians 2 we are given, perhaps, the greatest look at the Person of Jesus Christ. As I sat there this week in my study meditating on these verses trying to get my mind to wrap around these verses, the thought of my younger years came rushing back to me, He did this all for me. Reality is - if you have been saved for many years this truth is nothing new to you, we have been taught this over and over and over again, we have read this truth time and time again. But wait - with this truth have you lost the “wonder of it all”? At the very beginning of this outline we need to place our names;
For Paul (place your name here)
1) He left Heaven’s glories2) Made Himself of no reputation3) He came as a servant4) He came in the likeness of man5) He humbled Himself6) He became obedient unto death7) He became obedient unto death...even the death of the cross
I heard a couple of times this week – “preachers” speak about Heaven and Hell. This social Gospel is killing the church, preachers are preaching that that there is another way to Heaven besides through the blood of Jesus Christ, that Jesus Christ’s main purpose was not to lead to people from Hell to Heaven….what stupidity, what arrogance, what foolishness, these so called “preachers” are leading people to an eternity without Jesus Christ. I am going to be very frank here, if you believe this or if you are one who is preaching this; you need to remove yourself from the pulpit and get serious about salvation and Jesus Christ. You need to get a clear presentation of the Gospel and stop perverting the truth of the Scriptures. He left the glories of Heaven and came to die and rise again in order to provide a way of salvation. He came to lead people to the narrow gate for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. (Matthew 7:13-14)
If you were the only One who would come to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; He would have come. He came to live so that in His death, burial, and resurrection we might have life! But wait - this wonderful truth goes on; many churches preach the humility of Jesus Christ without the exaltation. I do not serve a dead Saviour, He’s alive, and in the next couple of verses Paul is going to expand on the exaltation of Jesus Christ.
Paul writes, Philippians 2:9-11 says, “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every other name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in Heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Don’t miss it- it is God who exalted Jesus Christ! If Jesus Christ had not lived among men He could not have identified with men. If Jesus Christ had not died upon that cross, He could not have been elevated from that lowest degree of sin back to the highest degree of exaltation. But, not only did God exalt Him He gave Him a name which is far above every other name, and that name is Lord. The phrases “will bow” (Philippians 2:9) and “will confess” (Philippians 2:11) introduce a purpose clause meaning the reason why God gave Jesus the name above all names is so that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess Jesus as Lord. We must realize that although not every soul will be saved, every knee will bow before Jesus Christ as Lord. And Paul says that although not every soul will be saved, every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. We will either do this in allegiance and adoration to Jesus being Lord of all or you will do this in acknowledgment of Him as Lord and still be condemned to an eternity spent in damnation after refusing to accept Him as your personal Lord and Saviour. Make no mistake about it, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The name Lord refers to the right to rule, and in the New Testament it describes mastery or ownership of people and property. Therefore, at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord. The early church preached Christ as Lord; in the book of Acts Jesus Christ is referred to as Saviour twice but as Lord ninety-two times, the New Testament calls Christ Lord seven hundred and forty seven times; there is no doubt that they preached Jesus Christ as Lord.
Revelation 19:16 says, “And He had on His robe and on His thigh a name written, “King of Kings and Lord of lords.”
My question for you this morning is this: Is He the Lord and King of your life?
If you have not come to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ then He is not your King or your Lord and you are not ready so stand before Him. If you have never experienced a personal relationship with Jesus Christ then please contact the church or write a comment and I will be glad to talk with you.
This week our blog was posted on Friday instead of Monday simply because of the VBS program. We have been delighted and privileged to have had such a wonderful couple as the Enns’ with us. I wish adults had the same energy and enthusiasm about learning about God as children do, that is why I think God has a special place for these young ones in His heart.
I invite you to come and meet with us this Sunday morning, a place where, through the music and preaching, the goal is to bring glory, praise, and honor to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This Sunday morning our prayer meeting will begin at 10:00 and our worship service will begin at 11:00 we invite you to come to join us!
Pastor Paul,
Matthew 4:19
May God richly bless your life and as you continue to serve and remain faithful too, Him!
