Follow The Yellow Brick Road

This week our studies took us into the book of wisdom, Proverbs. The word Proverb means “too rule or govern.” The book is loaded with principles that we should allow to govern our lives. Some of us live life in the fast lane where everything seems to be in fast forward, and the more we attempt to slow down, the faster we go. We are told to live with God’s wisdom. We need to be reminded that, although we are told to get wisdom, it can be rejected. I have to laugh at my loving father who tells me with a big smile on his face, “Don’t be a stoop.” God gave Solomon his request of wisdom but shortly after that he became “The Wisest Fool”. If we are going to apply wisdom in our lives, we must understand the requirement of wisdom, found in Proverbs 3:5-6. The word, “acknowledge” means to know, and it applies to walking in fellowship with our Heavenly Father. I have to laugh at my dad who tells us teasingly, “I have to do all the thinking for everyone” which is followed by, “but nobody ever listens to me.” When we make wisdom practical in our lives, we should be acknowledging God in every area. First is the rejection of wisdom, second, there is the requirement of wisdom, and third, the results of wisdom in Proverbs 3:12-18. When we make wisdom applicable in our lives the results will be more profitable than gold and silver, more precious than rubies, more pleasant than a cup of cold water on a hot and humid day, and more peaceful then laying your head down for a good nights sleep.

“Lessons from the Yellow Brick Road”…

Jesus said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

Do you remember as a child watching the classic movie, “The Wizard of Oz” or hearing our parents tell us to “Stay on the straight and the narrow”, or when asking for directions being told to “Stay on the road until you come to your destination?” Following the right path is the most important decision that you can ever make, because there is a path that leads to life and another one to destruction.
There I was in down town Toronto with my Bible in my hand and preaching on the love of God. I must confess, before that time, although I had heard preachers preach on winning lost souls to Jesus Christ I had never made that a high priority in my life. It was on that day when I saw people, not as flesh and blood, but as souls, some that would spend eternity with Jesus Christ while the majority are headed to an eternity in Hell, that I realized the importance of sharing my faith. A question that is commonly asked is, “Is Hell a real place?” I believe that while churches continue to grow in number by preaching sermons that makes us smile and feel warm and cozy inside they are unintentionally leading others to a Christ-less eternity by down playing the seriousness and the reality of Hell. We need to be reminded that Jesus Christ preached more on Hell than on Heaven. I agree with what Charlie Davis said, “We must shatter the notion that our main motivation for global missions is generated by pity for those who have less than we do. The main motivation for global missions should be that God deserves the worship of all people everywhere, whether they live in mud huts or in fine brick homes with a Mercedes-Benz in the garage.” When you look at a lost word what do you see? We are running out of time to share the Gospel. Friends, get busy with spreading the Good News and help lead others to that yellow brick road which is not made of brick but of gold.

We have been given the privilege and opportunity to worship our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in a free country. As the Psalmist said, “Let us worship His name together”. I invite you to come and worship the Lamb of God. Your attendance is important to us. This Sunday morning we will be meeting for Sunday School at 10:00, followed by the morning service beginning at 11:00. Come worship our Saviour with us! Like never before, the words of the book of Hebrews should be on the minds and hearts of all of those who belong to Jesus Christ: “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together; as in the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see that Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24, 25.

May God richly bless your life as you continue to serve and remain faithful to Him!
